OMG!…..I’ve Found My Niche

Posted by Nelson on March 29, 2010 in Life Wisdom |

For almost two months now I’ve been struggling with defining just what is my Niche market.   I have been drawing  blanks.   My age and the diminishing odds against me,(I’ll explain that later), leads me perhaps to a Market Niche of those who like cemetery plots with a view.  Or maybe a Niche Market of People that depend on Depends or some other utility beneficial to the Senior set.

So I looked up the Web definition of Niche and found this:

a. A situation or activity specially suited to a person’s interests, abilities, or nature:

b. A special area of demand for a product or service:

It seems that all I have to offer is Definition a. I have these few homey posts about my mother, history or some book I read almost a century ago.  I tell you it is frustrating,  just plain frustrating to feel you have something in you of value.  You don’t know what it is or for that matter if anyone even cares that you have it.  So I play the game, hoping to entertain you, until  something resonates with me as my “WHY” while also praying it fits into Definition b.

While thinking and reading on this I discovered some not very interesting statistics about Human aging.  Did you know that only 10 percent of seniors entering their Seventies will enter their Eighties.  I don’t like that.  Even worse is the 10 percent who make it to their Eighties, only 2 percent will go into their Nineties.  And from there statically those in their Nineties have a zero percent chance reaching one Hundred.  By now the low wattage bulb in this dimwit’s brain has lit up.  I’m gonna die!  Big deal so are you.  So Nelson quit your getting old crap and work the problem.

I read a book once by Francis Schaffer titled “How Should We Then Live”.  Schaffer writes about where you are spiritually compared to where the World is spiritually.  I extrapolated ( I know big word) Schaffer’s thoughts over to a more secular theme.  An aging populace in an technology advancing World.  This is a problem is it not?  I look at the six kids running the “Tribe Intensive MasterMind Community“,  and I swear I think I might have stuff in my Refrigerator older than these guys.  Why one of them teaches First Grade Elementary students and he looks like he just got out of the sixth grade himself. (just kidding Kary)  Look at your Grandparents, maybe even your parents. Have they kept up with you?  Most have not but many are trying.  It is those that I now (finally) see as my “Market Niche”.  Now here’s the good part about this Niche.  They have all the money.  Hehehe.

Time for a Disclaimer.  I did not think of this until the man  mentoring me brought it to my attention.  As we age, if that nasty “Mad Cow” disease doesn’t get us,  our minds when exercised function just like a young adult.  The problem is older people get lazy and think that being relevant is reserved only for the young.  When you really boil it down, the Senior who stays current gets deep satisfaction watching young people make the same mistakes they made 40-50 years ago.  My Mentor, he is so cool.  So  cool that I posted below a short montage of speeches he has given.  Watch the video and you will discover something that all ages, including the six young punks, will find educational.   I just hate it when I blurt stuff out.

Okay let’s end this and Publicly proclaim what my “Niche” is titled.

“Personal Development for Seniors between Ages 50 and Death”

My emphasis’s will center around how as Seniors you can enjoy life and remain relevant in the 21st Century.

You definitely don’t need to feel like you are alone in figuring out this niche business. – and I don’t think it has anything to do with age:) I ‘m not really sure what I am doing yet either and the learning curve is very steep for me just starting out. – However that being said, I think the niche you have chosen sounds like a good fit if you feel like it is. – Go for it! I look forward to more great posts from you.

Glyna, I appreciate you. Judging from your Blog page you are miles ahead of me. My mentor gave me a thought that I’m to repeat daily, hourly, or whenever I get discourage.

You do Jaden! Writing is just speaking in visual form with better grammar. Now creative writing, that’s a whole other ballgame which is one I want to learn. The stuff here is nothing more than if you and I were having coffee and I was just telling you something that happen in my life. No more no less. Go for it Jaden It’s Possible.

Aha… the niche struggle…anybody that wants to create an internet business…this is there first major hurdle… at least it was mine. you’ve hit on a great one… because I can relate…I was born well before the computer…so it’s not part of who i am…yet..

I must say though that if you have any tech challenges they are not evident in your blog…its very well done…

    BTW your mentor is right…

I can relate with you Tom. I grew up hollowing out logs so I could use them call my girl friend for a date.

Thanks Al for stopping by. You couldn’t have picked a better roll model than Les. I do mentoring classes with both Les and Paul Martinelli. I can’t praise these two enough. Keep on keeping on Al, you’ll do well.

This is my first time ‘visiting’ with you, but now we’ve met I’m going to be here a lot!

This is a fabulous post. Brilliantly witty and deeply insightful and then the gift of the Les Brown montage.
