Purpose, Vision, Goal-The Trinity of Success

Posted by Nelson on April 5, 2010 in Life Wisdom |

I love watching a child learning how to do things.  Watching them fail but to continue learning from their failures.  A child learning to ride a bike falls and cries out  “Stupid Bike“,  while a adult doing the same will say “I must be stupid not know how to ride this bike”  What happen?  What changed?  Eric Hoffer wrote.  “Regardless of our achievements, no matter what the achievements may be in our Lifetime.  We think well of ourselves only in rare moments.  We need people to bear witness against our inner judge that keeps a book of our failures and transgressions.”

Have you ever reviewed you past history with Goal setting.  Ever fail, quit,  or take a break from them with the intention of resuming but didn’t?  Not speaking for you, but I certainly have.  There was always next week, next month, next year, and in my case next decade.  What if we are looking at this Goal setting the wrong way?  What if  having properly executed the “Trinity of Success“,  we use these pauses from pursuing our goals to revisit our Purpose, Vision, and Goals. Remember what Hoffer said above. We are judging our Goals by our past mistakes.  This is time we should be editing the Purpose, Vision, and Goals we wrote in our Journal. (I’ll explain this at the end)

Purpose

This is the first step in defining yourself.  Some call it “Your Why”  Just remember this. Purpose is the filter through which you make most of your Life’s decisions. Your Purpose will not always remain fixed.  Life happens and sometimes a Purpose evolves and becomes a variant of what you first felt was your Purpose.  I’m going to list a series of questions to nudge you into writing your Purpose Statement.

1. Do I enjoy helping others?  2. If I could fix one problem in the World what would it be? 3. What do I love to do? 4.  What gives me inner joy? 5.  What fulfills me?  6.  What do I yearn to be?  7.  How would I like to spend my free time?  8.  What are my Hobbies?  9.  What am I best at?  10.  What part of my current position in life fulfills me the most?  11. Is being spiritually connected to my source important  to me?  12. What relationship in my life would I like to most improve?  13.  If I increase my income, what Charity would I give to?  14.  Is having a healthy body important to me and if it is why?  15.  What would I do differently if I weren’t in perfect health?

Remember your Purpose is like the Sun.  Your life revolves around your Purpose not your Purpose revolving around your life.

Vision

Writing your Vision statement is the most creative portion of the Trinity of Success and the most fun.  A Vision Statement is a well detailed Vision of your living into your full and present achievement of your Purpose Statement.  It has action steps as well as achievements.  Remember these statements are best when in the present tense along the Affirmations model. Your Vision Statement is a living breathing document that grows as you grow.  It will clarify and sharpen your Purpose and becomes the connecting link between your Purpose Statement and your Goals.

Goals

You will identify Goals from your Vision Statement.  You’ll have some short term Goals.  Perhaps only a day.  Longer term Goals can be a week, month, or a year.  Biggest problem is inside you.  That inner voice that tells you how you gonna do that?  Where are you getting the money for that?  You don’t  have the education to do that?  See the problem, your inner voice is reading from the book of all your failures.  It needs answers.  If it doesn’t get answers your mind gets stuck and starts the rejection process of the Goal.

To prevent this you have to come up with an answers to prevent these rejections in your mind.  Start recalling all your past creative successes.  The times you over came obstacles.  The times you helped somebody else overcome their obstacles.  You have a wealth of creative wins dating from the earliest day of your life right to the present day when you did a great job brushing your teeth this morning. ( I hope )   The purpose of your Goal is to live your Vision Statement and to let you become the person of your Purpose Statement.

If you have a past of not achieving your Goals, I suggest you set very short term Goals.  A day, even hourly goals.  Build a history of achieving Goals.  Give yourself the ability to keep your word and commitment to yourself.  Each small win builds on the last win and you will start creating a winning model in your mind.

Your Journal

Start today be keeping a Journal.  Give several pages to each member of the Trinity of Success.  When you find yourself away from the pursuit of your Goals, take that time to revisit them, expand them, and explore them in your mind driving out the negative that is hindering you.

I am posting a video clip of Nick Vujicic whom I sure many of you aware of, especially all my friends “Down Under.”    What Nick has done with his life leaves us without much to blame our failures on.

    Oh Nelson,
I love your beginning comments about how our views of our “failures” do change as we grow older. Right on spot with that! To realize we would not be walking, talking, or writing now if we had called ourselves stupid & stopped learning as children. :)

Your suggestions of keeping a journal keep everything in perspective. Wonderful ideas!
Thanks again for your great insights,
    Val :)

I have thought about starting a journal several times before, but felt like I didn’t really have much to write about. But after your explanation of the “Trinity of Success” that would be a great place to start:) I am going to get on that Purpose Statement right away!

I’m glad Glyna. Success is achieved in little steps and lot of failures. The Journal is just a tool to make the journey more “funner”

This is a wonderful post Nelson; lots of very useful ideas to employ in our own goal setting!

Nick is quite an inspiration, I’ve always enjoyed his videos. His role model is someone I strive to imitate. Jesus made it clear how he felt about the judgmental attitude we humans develop as we age.

At Luke 6: 37 Jesus said, “Stop judging. . .” I think it is interesting he didn’t say, “Don’t judge.” Jesus clearly knew our tendencies. If we stop judging ourselves (and others), we free ourselves from so much negative baggage and give ourselves permission to focus on just the positive steps we can take each day as we move along our course of goal achievement.

Looking forward to your next post.

    Joe

As the mom of a 2 year old, I can already see how much this time of early motherhood will teach me! Children are so wise ~ I love how you opened this post. So true.

I am a huge fan of this trinity ~ I have had success in life largely because I spend time regularly getting clear about what my passions are and what the vision for my life is…and then laying out my goals and really taking consistent and inspired action. I absolutely love what you said about our purpose being like the sun ~ our life revolves around it, not it around our life! :)

And Nick rocks ~ thank you for sharing this video. He proves to us all that our possibilities are indeed infinite, and entirely up to us to create! Really solid post, thanks Nelson!

Thanks Beth for your very kind comments. I sometimes wish (not really) that I could have grasped these truths when I was young. But in reality I am most satisfied that I have learned these things ( Trinity) and will make the best of them for the time remaining.

Great Post Nelson. Right under Purpose, you have…”do you enjoy helping others?” The “Go-Giver” Book talks about making an IMPACT on peoples lives.

I like how you equate your vision to ACTION

  • Hey Nelson,

This is a great post!! We must all live our lives with purpose, our vision must be laser sharp, we must always set goals for ourselves and strive to be the best we can be.

What a touching video, it really puts peoples complaints about how difficult or challenging something is…
    …into perspective!

    Thanks for sharing,

  • Each morning I journal, I don’t question anything that comes to me I just write. I don’t go over it and make changes, I just write. I don’t read it for weeks I just write. Answers come to me over and over again when I sit quietly and write. I take action on those answers and this journaling experience has taken my business to many different levels. In return, I give as much time to it as i can in the morning before anything else. It is divine exploration for me and the answers are also divine. Thank you for encouraging others to spend time in that space Nelson. Excellent post.
