The 3 D’s…Do It, Delegate It, Dump It
Today my post is based on both a Old Testament and New Testament portion of Scripture. Isaiah Chapter 50 verse 7 …..I have set My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed…….and Luke 9:53… but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem….. Both Scriptures speak of a single mindedness and focus on a specific purpose. So let’s look at Time Management mirroring the truth of these Scriptures.
I’m sure I’m not alone here. When you commit to daily study either in Scripture or any other worth while written word, “change happens”. What I am ineptly getting to is no matter what you use for Personal Development, the key to success is in your use of “Time Management”. You know the sayings,…..”There’s not enough hours in the day”….”I don’t have enough time”….”I can’t believe I didn’t get to that”…”Why did I waste my time on that”. We all know that it is not Time that is at fault. We all have the same amount of Time. No more or less. We all are equal when it comes to Time and no amount of money can buy one more second of Time.
Maybe we should call Time Management “Time Awareness.” The Present is the only Absolute we have. The Past has happened and we can never ever change it. As for our Future, we to work on our now or Present so we can create a future that looks like our Life’s Purpose. The power to change can only done in the Present or the Now. Time awareness is more about spending Time that reflects our Purpose and not completing a “To Do List”. The question should be “Am I doing all I can do in this moment to live in my Life’s Purpose?”
So the real question is this. How do I best use my time to fulfill my Life’s Purpose? How do I live a life that is truly in harmony with my Life’s Purpose. Socrates said, “the unexamined life is not worth living”. Many try living into their Life’s Purpose which is a start, but to really use your time at the fullest, try living your life from your Life’s Purpose. When living from your Life’s Purpose time flies. You get caught up in the activity and time doesn’t matter. You feel that High that only fulfilling your Life’s Purpose can give you. It’s an exciting wonderful feeling. You’re in the moment doing what you were meant to do and it feels right and Time doesn’t matter.
Scientist tell us that there is no such thing as Time. It is an invention of man. A measurement of the space between two sequential events. Multi-tasking is placing two or more task between or in the space between these events. What a better approach would be to focus on the one task that makes you live from your Purpose. Marinating the thought or task stretches the space between events. It lets you focus on your Life’s Purpose. You may get more things done by Multi-tasking, but do the things getting done really matter to your Life’s Purpose or are they just things on a “To do list”. Is it more important to do things or is it better to do the right things that move you deeper into your Purpose?
Our “To Do list” often has things on it that are good but not necessary to our Life’s Purpose. They sometimes take from the real tasks that move us forward. I would suggest that we shift our thinking from a “To Do List” to a “To Be List”. “To Be List” are those things that come out of our Life’s Purpose. Okay, I hear the muttering out there. How can I accomplish getting all this done? Well here’s what I’m doing in this area. I’m doing the 3 D’s. “Do It, Delegate It, or Dump it.”
Do it: Is this something that only I can do? Is it something that is required to fulfill my Life’s Purpose? Is it something that I absolutely want to trade the hours of my life for? At the Bottom of this post is a video of Art Williams of “A L WILLIAMS” fame. Art says it all by saying “Just Do It”.
Delegate It: Does it absolutely have to be done by me? Control Freaks look hard at this. The world keeps moving with or without you. Not everything has to have your fat hand on it. Give it up. So what it’s not done as well as if you did it. Big deal! Not vital to your Life’s Purpose so get over it and let somebody else do it. “What matters the most should never come at the expense of what matters the lest”.(I have no idea who said that, but it sounds good) If you catch your self using the words, I must, I should, I gotta, I have to. Look to see it these things can be Delegated.
Dump It: Will life as you know it end if it doesn’t get done? Will some body suffer if you don’t do it? If it is not in Harmony with who you want to be, then your are better off without it. I challenge you to to find those things in your life that need to be dumped and just DO IT, Dump them.
When people say they don’t have enough time, I say we all have the same amount of time. It just boils down to some doing things that give value to their Life’s Purpose while others do those things that take away from their Life’s Purpose. When we say we don’t have enough time, our mind looks to support that thought, so at the end of the day we are convinced of our inability to live out of Life’s Purpose. Time Management comes down to your mind set. Time Management is this: 1. Think about what you must do to live your Life’s Purpose and 2. Just DO IT!
Back to the Scripture: His Face (Purpose) was like Flint. HE was focused on the task. And HE just Did It.

I'm a 74 year old man who loves this new medium of Blogging. I am also an Senior Manager in Send Out Cards which gives me a superior method of relating to the world through Greeting Cards. I have met and enjoyed wonderful friends who support me and actually LIKE me which is very rewarding. My online presence is growing and if I can hang on to life I will reap the benefits of establishing a business that will comfort me when I get old. Mostly however I Blog about my life which for some strange reason is well received. Like most of us the future is scary and the remembrance of older days give a measure of comfort. So I continue to reveal the past with optimism that the future will some day be the comfort of somebody else.

Do it! Delegate it! Dump it!
That’s a brilliant way to look at what can be an overwhelming task list! As they say KISS: Keep it Simple, Sweetheart!

I love it! The 3 D’s – that’s a great way to get organized as far as our time goes. And – you are so right – we all have the same amount of time in a day, but the difference is how we spend it:) Great insight – as always

Nelson… this is so true “Do it! Delegate it! Dump it! ”
If we will take take action on this statement. The amount of time we can save in our daily lives is unbelievable. This is the same strategy I use in my business. When something hit my desk… I take the necessary action required, delegate it to someone on my team or round file it. Thanks for sharing.

Nelson,
Your post was very informative and inspirational because you focused on basics, and it is basics — applied over and over and over again — that allow us to DO IT!
When he became Head coach, it is said Vince Lombardi told reporters his focus for molding the Green Bay Packers into a winning team would be to work on the basics. . .blocking, running, tackling, passing and catching. Nothing else, just the basics.
Art Williams did the same thing in building his insurance empire, focusing on the basics.
Your reminder is certainly timely, given the state of affairs this nation’s business community faces (some 23 years after Art stated it needed a major overhaul — boy, was he ever right!).
If I may add one thought to what you shared, it may help others REALLY bring their life’s purpose to fruition. It is said that, “What gets measured gets done.”
Each of us should take a look at those things we feel ONLY we must do. Track each task in two ways: (1) the amount of time it takes to complete, (2) what it adds to your bottom line (or your ability to “live in your life’s purpose”).
You’ll undoubtedly find that 20% of your tasks bring 80% of your reward (this is the Pareto Principal at work). Delegate the rest and focus on that 20% that gives you the 80% return; your life will change dramatically and rapidly.
Looking forward to your next post.

Nelson,
I really appreciate this post as I find procrastination to be a challenge for me. The choices to do it, delegate it, or dump it make for a clear, clean plan. I fully intend to clean up my messes and have more space to achieve my goals of helping others more effectively. It has to start with me. And I LOVE the video.
Thanks so much,
